What is your Word? For a techie it might be ADAPT. (It also might be for a parent ...) For a workaholic...it might be LAUGH As a burn-out preventative, it might be EQUINIMITY. Words are doors into perception. Or windows that convey meaning. They are sacred to most human beings. Certainly to the People of the Book i.e. the Judeo-Christian and Muslim traditions : In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." - Genesis Even non-religious folks who do not believe in theism i.e. a supernatural god out there...(i.e. those thoughtful atheists)....or the classical conception of God...Even the increasingly popular category of faith called the "Spiritual and not religious." believe in words. If we can find the right words, we can bring a mnemonic of sacredness or ease into our physical spaces...or just some good fun...
Words are both universally valued and acknowledged to be inadequate to convey the mystery of the sacred (mysterium tremendum). But they are what we have to work with...so let's use what tools we have at our disposal...Yes?.
With words we co-create our world. Poets do it with words. Gardens can too. What are your sacred words? Or what words will make your daily life better... As a landscape architect, not that I have anything against statuary...like a well placed Buddah or Madonna in the garden can be a very peaceful thing...but it is not as interesting as words, I think. But the question is what do YOU think? How does it serve you in the garden.

Renovating an entry is about strategically correcting the bones ... It is both about width and height: correcting a too small width so two people cannot walk side by side up to the front door. Single step elevation mistakes are common unfortunates, too. This existing entry lacks a sense of arrival. People cannot walk beside each other to arrive and when they do get to the front door, they have still not arrived. They are one step down to the level of the house. This may sound subtle but to arrive in spaciousness and to a level that is the same as the house offers hospitality even before the host speaks. How an entry is situated, shapes the experience and says a great deal about the inhabitants ...or it could. It is not just the improved real estate value that an investment in "curb appeal" affects, it is the pleasure that the dwellers receive each and every time they enter their own home. It welcomes them and can offer a sense of arrival and welcome. |
Let's talk about it...
